who wrote the wedding march

The famous piece known as “The Wedding March” was written by the German Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn in 1842 for his incidental music to Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

It later became popular as recessional music at weddings, especially after it was used in 1858 at the wedding of Queen Victoria’s daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal, to Prince Frederick William of Prussia.
