You generally should not drink water while whitening strips are on your teeth , but you can drink plain water once you remove them.

Quick Scoop

  • While strips are on:
    • Avoid drinking water. It can dilute or wash away the whitening gel, so it won’t stay in full contact with your enamel and the treatment may be less effective.
* Some people sip through a straw in a true “emergency,” but this still risks moving the strips and reducing results, so it’s not ideal.
  • After you take the strips off:
    • Drinking plain water right away is usually considered fine and can help rinse away leftover gel and freshen your mouth.
* If your teeth are feeling sensitive or you’re using a strong formula, many dentists and brands suggest waiting about 20–30 minutes before any other foods or colored drinks so the enamel surface can “settle” again and is less likely to stain.
  • Safety note:
    • If a little gel or water gets in your mouth and you swallow it, it’s unlikely to harm you in small amounts, but it can irritate your stomach if you ingest a lot, so don’t intentionally lick or swallow the gel.
* Always follow the specific instructions on your whitening strip brand and ask your dentist if you have sensitive teeth, cavities, or dental work such as crowns or fillings.

Simple rule to follow

  1. Put strips on clean, dry teeth.
  2. Don’t eat or drink anything (including water) while they’re on.
  3. When time is up, remove strips, gently wipe or lightly rinse.
  4. Drink only water at first; save coffee, tea, soda, and wine for at least 30 minutes after.
