Chromosomes pull apart during anaphase of cell division.

Key idea

  • In mitosis, sister chromatids separate and are pulled toward opposite poles of the cell during anaphase.
  • This separation begins right after metaphase, when chromosomes had been lined up in the middle of the cell.

Extra note (meiosis)

  • In meiosis, homologous chromosomes separate in anaphase I, and sister chromatids separate in anaphase II, but in both cases the “pulling apart” stage is called anaphase.
