The five lines on which musical notation is written are called the staff (or stave in British English). In Western music notation, the staff is a set of five horizontal lines and the four spaces between them, each representing a different pitch. Musicians place notes, rests, and other musical symbols on these lines and spaces to show what to play and how high or low it should sound. Clefs like the treble clef or bass clef are added at the beginning of the staff to fix which exact pitches the lines and spaces stand for.
