Mendoza can refer to both a city and a province in western Argentina, and their sizes are very different.

  • The City of Mendoza (the provincial capital) covers an area of about 54–57 km², depending on the source and whether minor administrative adjustments are counted.
  • The city proper has just over 120,000 inhabitants, but it sits at the core of a much larger metropolitan area (Gran Mendoza) with more than 1 million people, making it one of Argentina’s main urban centers.

Mendoza Province

  • Mendoza Province is much larger, with an area of roughly 148,000–149,000 km², making it one of the biggest provinces in Argentina by territory.
  • The province has around 2 million inhabitants and stretches from the high Andes on the Chilean border across foothills and plains, including key wine‑growing regions.
