Quick Scoop

In PoE2, a league is a fresh seasonal start where everyone begins on a new economy and usually gets access to a new mechanic or ruleset for that season. When the league ends, your character and items typically move into the permanent mode, so you can keep playing them there.

Do new mechanics transfer?

Usually, yes, but not always immediately. The league mechanic is tested in the seasonal league first, and after the season ends, Grinding Gear Games decides whether parts of it become core and show up in permanent play like Standard. If a mechanic is not added to core, it stays limited to that league or gets replaced by whatever the next season brings.

What that means in practice

  • You start fresh in the seasonal league with everyone else.
  • The league often has a special mechanic exclusive to that season.
  • When it ends, your character transfers to a permanent league, usually Standard or Hardcore depending on the mode.
  • The new mechanic may be added to the core game later, but that is a separate decision.

One simple way to think about it

Think of a league as a test-and-reset season : you play the new content while everything is fresh, then the character stays but the season itself ends. That is why league mechanics can feel temporary at first, even if some of them later become permanent.

Tiny TL;DR

PoE2 leagues are seasonal resets, and characters usually move to a permanent mode afterward; new mechanics sometimes transfer to the core game, but only if GGG decides to keep them.
