The NRL finals use a “top eight” system over four weeks, with the top four teams getting a double chance and the bottom four in straight knock-out.

Big picture

  • After the 27-round regular season, the top 8 teams qualify.
  • Positions 1–4 get a safety net (lose once in Week 1 and you’re still alive).
  • Positions 5–8 are sudden-death from the start.
  • The finals run over four weeks: Qualifying/Elimination, Semi-finals, Preliminary finals, then the Grand Final.

Week 1 – Qualifying & Elimination

Four games: two “qualifying” (double-chance) and two “elimination” (lose and you’re out).

  • Qualifying finals (top 4):
    • 1st vs 4th
    • 2nd vs 3rd
    • Winners go straight to Week 3 (preliminary finals).
* Losers are not eliminated; they play again in Week 2.
  • Elimination finals (bottom 4):
    • 5th vs 8th
    • 6th vs 7th
    • Winners advance to Week 2.
* Losers are out.

Home advantage in Week 1 goes to the higher-ranked team on the ladder.

Week 2 – Semi-finals

Two games, both sudden-death.

  • Each semi-final is:
    • Loser of a Week 1 qualifying final vs Winner of a Week 1 elimination final.
  • Higher-ranked team (from the regular season) gets home advantage.
  • Winners move to Week 3, losers are out.

Week 3 – Preliminary finals

Two games deciding who reaches the Grand Final.

  • Each preliminary final is:
    • Winner of a Week 1 qualifying final (who had the bye in Week 2) vs Winner of a Week 2 semi-final.
  • The qualifying-final winners usually get home advantage.
  • Winners go to the Grand Final; losers are eliminated.

Week 4 – Grand Final

  • One match between the two preliminary final winners to decide the premiership.
  • Played at a major venue (traditionally Sydney).

Ladder position advantages (quick table)

Finish Home finals Double chance? Wins needed to reach GF
1st–2nd Two (Week 1 + Week 2 or 3) Yes 2
3rd–4th One (Week 1 or later) Yes 2
5th–6th One (Week 1 only) No 3
7th–8th None No 3

Simple example path

  • Team finishing 1st: win in Week 1, skip Week 2, win prelim in Week 3 → straight into Grand Final with only two wins.
  • Team finishing 7th: must win elimination final (Week 1), semi (Week 2), prelim (Week 3), then Grand Final (Week 4) – four straight do-or-die games.
