The World Cup Round of 32 is decided from the group stage: the top two teams in each of the 12 groups qualify automatically, and the eight best third-place teams across all groups fill the remaining spots.

How it works

  • 48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4.
  • Each team plays 3 group matches.
  • The top 2 in every group advance, which gives 24 teams.
  • The best 8 third-place teams across all groups also advance, bringing the total to 32.

How third-place teams are ranked

Third-place teams are compared across all groups using:

  1. Points.
  2. Goal difference.
  3. Goals scored.
  4. Fair play/discipllinary record.
  5. Drawing of lots if still tied.

Bracket setup

The exact Round of 32 matchups are not fully locked until the group stage ends, because the identity of the eight third-place qualifiers affects the bracket. Once set, it becomes single-elimination: win and advance, lose and go home.

Match rules

If a Round of 32 match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time, and then penalties if needed.

In simple terms, the Round of 32 is the first knockout stage, and it rewards strong group-stage performance while still giving some third-place teams a path through.
