Hot dogs are generally safe in the fridge for about 1 week after opening and up to about 2 weeks if the package is still unopened and properly refrigerated at or below 40°F (4°C). Cooked hot dogs typically keep 3–7 days in the fridge, after which quality and safety start to drop.

Basic time limits

  • Unopened package: About 2 weeks in the fridge if kept cold and sealed.
  • Opened package: Use within about 1 week for best safety and taste.
  • Cooked hot dogs: Around 3–4 days (some sources say up to 7) in a sealed container.
  • At room temperature: Do not leave out more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F).

Quick signs they’ve gone bad

  • Sour or off smell when you open the container.
  • Slimy or sticky surface instead of a firm, smooth feel.
  • Dull, grayish, or uneven discoloration on the outside.

If you notice any of these or you’re past the time windows above, it’s safer to throw them out.
