Michelangelo took about four years to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, from 1508 to 1512.

He began the project in 1508 under Pope Julius II and the ceiling was unveiled in late October 1512, just before All Saints’ Day, after years of exhausting fresco work on roughly 10,000 square feet of vaulting.
