The U.S. Constitution has 27 amendments in force today.

These include:

  • The first 10 amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791.
  • Seventeen later amendments, such as the 13th (abolishing slavery), 14th (citizenship and equal protection), 15th (voting rights regardless of race), and 26th (voting age lowered to 18).

In total, 33 amendments have been approved by Congress and sent to the states, but only 27 have been ratified and actually become part of the Constitution.
