The original Pride flag had eight colors. It was designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, and the later six-color version became the more familiar standard after two colors were removed.

Colors in the original flag

The eight original stripes were:

  • Pink
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Turquoise
  • Blue
  • Purple

Why it changed

Pink was removed because the fabric was hard to source, and turquoise was later removed so the design could be adjusted more easily, leaving the six- color rainbow most people recognize today.
