In a standard ODI (50-over) match, each bowler can bowl a maximum of 10 overs in an innings.

A simple way to remember it: the limit is one-fifth of the total overs for that innings.

So:

  • 50-over ODI → max 10 overs per bowler.
  • If the match is shortened (for example to 40 overs per side), then the max per bowler becomes 8 overs (one-fifth of 40).

This rule keeps things balanced so one bowler cannot dominate the entire innings and teams must use multiple bowlers.
