There are traditionally 14 Stations of the Cross in the standard Catholic devotion. However, a couple of nuances are worth noting in case you’re writing or researching:

  • Historically, the number of stations wasn’t always fixed; some medieval versions had as few as 7 and as many as 30+ stops on the Way of the Cross.
  • Since the 18th century, the widely accepted norm in the Catholic Church has been 14 stations, from Jesus being condemned to death to Jesus being laid in the tomb.
  • Some modern devotional versions add a 15th “station” for the Resurrection, but this is an optional, more recent pastoral addition rather than part of the classic 14.
