how many wet diapers for newborn
Most healthy newborns have about 6–8 wet diapers per day by the end of the first week of life, which is a good sign they’re getting enough milk and are well hydrated.
Quick Scoop
Typical wet diapers by age
- Day 1: About 1–2 wet diapers in 24 hours.
- Day 2: Around 2–4 wet diapers.
- Day 3: About 4–6 wet diapers.
- Day 4–5: 4–6, increasing to 6 or more per day.
- Day 6 and beyond (newborn period): Usually 6–8 or more wet diapers per day; some babies may have up to 10.
Think of it this way: by about day 5, a well-hydrated newborn should generally be soaking a diaper at least every few hours.

When to call the pediatrician
- Fewer than 3 wet diapers in 24 hours after the first few days of life.
- Very dark, strong-smelling urine or brick-red/orange crystals past the first couple of days.
- Baby seems very sleepy, hard to wake for feeds, or is feeding poorly along with low diaper counts.
If you’re ever unsure, it’s always safe to call your baby’s doctor and simply say: “My newborn is X days old and had only Y wet diapers in the last 24 hours—should I be worried?”
