After a touchdown, the scoring team can also try for:

  • 1 extra point by kicking the ball through the uprights.
  • 2 points with a two-point conversion play from short yardage.

So on a single scoring drive, a team can end up with 6, 7, or 8 points depending on what happens after the touchdown.
