In the UK in the 2025–26 tax year, Child Benefit is paid weekly but usually received every 4 weeks. The amount you get depends on how many children you’re claiming for.

Current Child Benefit rates (2025–26)

For the tax year 2025–26, the main rates are:

  • £26.05 per week for your eldest or only child
  • £17.25 per week for each additional child

That works out as approximately (per year):

  • 1 child: £1,354.60
  • 2 children: £2,251.60
  • 3 children: £3,148.60

These figures apply UK‑wide (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and are normally paid every 4 weeks into your bank account.

From April 2026 (already announced)

The UK government has confirmed that Child Benefit will go up in April 2026 in line with inflation (3.8% CPI to Sept 2025). The new weekly rates will be:

  • Eldest/only child: £27.05 per week
  • Each additional child: £17.90 per week

Because payments are usually every 4 weeks, that means around:

  • £108.20 every 4 weeks for one child
  • £179.80 every 4 weeks for two children
  • £251.40 every 4 weeks for three children

These 2026 rates are scheduled to start from April 2026.

Quick example

If you have two children in 2025–26:

  • Weekly: £26.05 + £17.25 = £43.30
  • Annual: about £2,251.60

From April 2026, the same family would receive £27.05 + £17.90 = £44.95 per week before any High Income Child Benefit Charge is applied.

Important notes

  • Only one person can claim Child Benefit for each child (usually the main carer).
  • If you or your partner have a higher income, you may be affected by the High Income Child Benefit Charge and might need to complete a Self Assessment tax return.
  • Official details, eligibility, and how to claim are set out on the UK government Child Benefit page.
