In Australia, the fuel excise is 52 cents per litre as of the latest source I found, with a temporary halving announced from March 2026 cutting about 26.3 cents per litre during the relief period.

Quick Scoop

The fuel excise is a federal tax on petrol and diesel, and it is usually indexed over time.

Current rate

  • Normal rate: 52c per litre.
  • Temporary relief: 26.3c per litre reduction for three months, according to the March 2026 announcement.

What that means

If you are paying at the bowser during the relief period, the excise component should be roughly half its usual level. Outside that period, the standard excise rate applies again.

Note

Different fuel products can have different excise rates, and the ATO updates these periodically.
