The World Athletics Championships in outdoor track and field are held every two years (biennially) , typically in odd-numbered years to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games.

Originally, the first three editions (starting in 1983) were staged every four years, but from 1991 onward the event switched to a regular two-year cycle.
