The Winter Olympics are held every four years.

Basic timing

  • The Winter Olympic Games take place on a four-year cycle, just like the Summer Olympics.
  • Since 1994, the Winter and Summer Games have been staggered so that one of them happens every two years (Summer, then two years later Winter, and so on).

Recent and upcoming Games

  • The Games have followed this four-year rhythm since their early editions, with interruptions only during World War II.
  • The next Winter Olympics after Beijing 2022 are scheduled for 2026 in Milan–Cortina, continuing the same four-year pattern.
