How to measure windows for curtains

Quick Scoop: Measure the width where the curtain will hang, then measure the drop from the hanging point to where you want the curtains to end. Use a metal tape measure and write down both numbers carefully so your curtains fit the window properly.

Width

Measure the curtain pole or track rather than the bare window frame if you already have hardware installed.

If you are starting from scratch, plan for the pole to extend beyond the window on both sides so the curtains can stack off the glass and let in more light.

For rods with decorative ends, measure between the finials; for tracks, measure the full track width.

Length

Decide first whether you want sill length, below-sill length, or floor length before measuring the drop.

Then measure from the top of the pole or track, or from the ring position if you are using curtain rings, down to the chosen end point.

A common floor-length choice is to stop just above the floor, while sill- length curtains usually end near the sill.

Simple method

  1. Use a metal tape measure.
  1. Measure the width of the pole or track, not just the window opening.
  1. Measure the drop from the hanging point to the desired finish point.
  1. Check each measurement twice before ordering.

Common mistakes

Do not mix inches and centimeters in the same measurement set.

Do not forget to account for the pole’s extension beyond the window frame, because that affects the final width needed.

Do not assume the sill or floor is perfectly level; checking more than one point can help avoid a crooked finish.

Example

If your pole is wider than the window by a few inches on each side, you measure the full pole width for the curtain width, then measure from the pole down to the sill or floor for the length.

That gives you the two numbers most curtain sellers need: width and drop.
