To switch off a private Twitter/X account, go to Settings and privacyPrivacy and safetyAudience and tagging , then turn off Protect your posts so your account becomes public again.

Steps

  1. Open X/Twitter and tap your profile photo or menu icon.
  2. Choose Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Privacy and safety.
  4. Open Audience and tagging.
  5. Turn off Protect your posts. When this is off, your posts are public.

What changes

  • Anyone can see your posts, not just approved followers.
  • New people can follow you without needing approval.
  • Your profile will no longer show as private, often removing the lock icon.

Mobile vs desktop

The menu names are mostly the same on phone and computer, though the icon you tap first may differ slightly. On both, the key setting is still Protect your posts.

Quick note

If you were looking for an exact step-by-step for the current app layout, recent guides still show the same path: Settings and privacyPrivacy and safetyAudience and tagging → turn off Protect your posts.
