You can’t fully “turn off” Google’s AI Overview globally right now, but you can reliably avoid it with a few workarounds on desktop and mobile.

What AI Overview Is

Google’s AI Overview is the summary box at the top of some search results, generated by Google’s Gemini model to answer your query in a single blurb.

Google does not currently offer a universal toggle in settings to disable AI Overviews for all searches.

Fast Ways To Skip AI Overview

  • Use the Web tab under the search bar
    • After you search, click or tap “Web” under the search box to see mostly classic blue links with no AI Overview at the top.
* On some layouts, “Web” may be hidden under **“More”** ; tap “More” → **Web**.
  • Add &udm=14 to your URL
    • When you search, your URL looks like https://www.google.com/search?q=your+query.
    • Add &udm=14 at the end so it becomes ...q=your+query&udm=14, then press Enter; this forces Google’s “Web” mode and usually removes AI Overviews.

Make a “No AI Overview” Search Engine (Desktop)

You can turn this trick into a custom search engine so you never have to type &udm=14 manually.

Chrome (similar idea in other browsers)

  1. Open browser settings → Search engine → Manage search engines / Site search.
  1. Click Add and fill in:
    • Name: AI-free Web (or anything you like)
    • Shortcut: for example @web
    • URL: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
  1. Save it and set this as default search engine (or use the shortcut like @web + space before typing your query).

From now on, normal address-bar searches will go straight to Google’s Web mode and usually skip AI Overview.

Mobile Tips To Avoid AI Overview

  • Manual &udm=14 trick
    • After a search, tap the address bar, add &udm=14 to the URL, and reload the page to show mostly standard results.
  • Use the Web filter
    • On mobile Google Search, swipe the row of filters under the search bar and tap Web to hide the AI box for that query.
  • Switch to privacy-focused apps
    • Search using DuckDuckGo or Brave Search , which show traditional results and don’t inject Google’s AI Overview at all.

Extensions, Labs, and Extra Tricks

  • Browser extensions
    • Chrome/Firefox extensions like “Hide Google AI Overviews” remove the AI box from result pages automatically once installed.
  • Old Search Labs toggle (where available)
    • If you see Search Labs in Google, you may have a Search Generative Experience (SGE) toggle; turning that off removes experimental AI summaries for that account.
* This option only appears for users who were in the Labs experiment, and it does not cover every new AI Overview rollout.

TL;DR: There’s no single “off” switch yet, but using Google’s Web tab, &udm=14 URLs or a custom “AI-free Web” search engine, plus optional extensions or alternative search engines, gives you an almost AI-overview-free experience.
