When you mute someone’s status on WhatsApp, nothing changes for them – it only changes how you see their updates.

What actually happens

  • Their future status updates stop appearing in your main “Recent updates” list and move to a “Muted updates” section at the bottom of the Status tab.
  • You can still view their statuses if you scroll down to the muted section and tap them manually.
  • You don’t get notifications or pop‑ups for their new statuses.
  • The person is not notified that you muted their status, and there’s no way for them to see it from their side.
  • Muting status does not affect chats: their messages, calls, and your ability to see each other’s profile photos/last seen all work as normal.

Mini “story” example

Imagine someone posts 20 random quotes every day. You mute their status once, and from then on:

  • Your main status feed looks calmer because their posts no longer sit at the top.
  • On a bored evening, you can still scroll down to “Muted updates” and binge all their statuses if you feel like it.

They keep posting like nothing changed – only your view has quietly filtered them out.

Extra notes

  • You can unmute them anytime by going to the muted section, opening their status, and choosing “Unmute”.
  • Muting chat and muting status are separate: to silence both messages and statuses, you have to mute each one individually.
