A red card means the player is sent off immediately and cannot be replaced, so the team finishes the match with one fewer player. In most competitions, the player also misses at least the next match, and the punishment can be longer depending on how serious the offense was.

What it means

  • The player must leave the field right away.
  • Their team plays the rest of the game a player down.
  • The player is usually suspended for the next game automatically.

Why it happens

A red card is usually given for serious fouls like violent conduct, spitting, dangerous tackles, offensive language, or denying a clear goal-scoring chance. A second yellow card in the same match also becomes a red card.

Extra consequences

Some competitions can add more suspension games or fines after review. In big tournaments, appeals may be possible, but the default rule is that the red card stands unless overturned.

In plain English: red card = off the pitch now, and often out for the next match too.
