There is now an official language at the U.S. federal level: English. In March 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, after more than two centuries in which the country had no federally recognized official language and English functioned only as the de facto national language. This order made English the standard language for federal government business nationwide, while many individual states continue to have their own language laws and, in a few cases, additional official languages alongside English.
