Main layers in order

From the surface going inward, the layers are:

  1. Crust
    • Thin, solid outer skin where we live.
    • Includes continents and ocean floors, made mostly of rocky materials like basalt and granite.
  2. Mantle
    • Very thick layer of hot, solid rock that can slowly flow.
    • Extends to about 2,900 km deep and drives plate movements and many volcanoes.
  3. Core
    • Mostly iron and nickel.
    • Outer core : liquid metal that helps generate Earth’s magnetic field.
    • Inner core : solid ball of very hot, dense metal under huge pressure.

Scientists also sometimes talk about layers by how they behave mechanically, using terms like lithosphere (crust + uppermost mantle, rigid) and asthenosphere (a softer, slowly flowing zone below the lithosphere).
