“Deejay” (also written “DJ”) is an informal word that means disc jockey – a person whose job is to select, introduce, and play recorded music, for example on radio, at clubs, parties, or events.

In modern use, “to deejay” can also be a verb meaning to work as that kind of music host or performer, especially at a party, nightclub, wedding, or on a radio show. In Jamaican music and reggae culture, “deejay” can specifically refer to the MC or vocalist who talks, chants, or “toasts” over instrumental tracks rather than the person just selecting records.
