The Declaration of Independence says it was necessary for the American colonies to:

  • “dissolve the political bands” connecting them with Britain, and
  • “assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station” to which they were entitled.

In simpler terms, the Declaration says it had become necessary for one people (the colonists) to break their political connection with another (Great Britain) and become a free and independent nation, equal to other countries.
