Aloka is a rescue dog who became widely known as the “Peace Dog” for walking with Theravada Buddhist monks on a long multistate “Walk for Peace” pilgrimage in the United States.

What happened to Aloka

During the Walk for Peace, Aloka suffered a leg injury and needed veterinary surgery to treat it. The monks and organizers announced that he would undergo surgery while the rest of the group continued their trek.

Current condition and recovery

Reports in mid‑January 2026 state that Aloka’s surgery was successful and that he is now in recovery under veterinary supervision. His caregivers have been instructed to strictly limit his walking time at first and then gradually increase it as his leg heals.

Role in the Walk for Peace

Aloka has been walking part of the 2,300‑mile route and riding in a support vehicle when needed, becoming a symbol of compassion and perseverance for supporters along the way. The monks say the Walk for Peace is meant to promote unity and mindfulness as they travel toward Washington, D.C., with Aloka as a beloved companion.
