Merle Dixon dies in The Walking Dead after trying
to take down the Governor on his own. He’s attacked, beaten, shot in the
chest, and later reanimated as a walker before Daryl puts him down.
What happened
After being abandoned on a rooftop early in the series,
Merle survives by cutting off his own hand and later ends up in Woodbury under
the Governor’s control. In his final storyline, he chooses to betray the
Governor’s plan, stages a one-man ambush, and is killed for it.
Why it matters
His death is framed as a redemption moment: Merle goes
out trying to protect others instead of serving himself. Daryl is the one who
finds his reanimated brother and puts him down, which becomes one of the
show’s most emotional moments for him.
In one line
Merle Dixon wasn’t just written off — he died while
trying to make up for his past, and Daryl had to kill him again after he
turned.
