Tai Lung is defeated by Po in the first Kung Fu Panda movie, and after the Wuxi Finger Hold he is sent into the Spirit Realm rather than shown clearly dying on-screen. In Kung Fu Panda 4 , he briefly returns from the Spirit Realm, fights again, and is then sent back there after being overpowered.

What happened in the first film

Tai Lung was Shifu’s former student and adopted son figure who became bitter after being denied the Dragon Scroll. He attacks the Valley of Peace, but Po defeats him at the end with the Wuxi Finger Hold.

What that means

The films treat his fate as spiritual exile, not a straightforward confirmed death. Later material makes clear that the Wuxi Finger Hold sends a character to the Spirit Realm, which is why Tai Lung can appear again later.
