A pawn that reaches the other side of the chessboard is promoted to another piece, usually a queen. The player can choose a queen, rook, bishop, or knight, and the pawn is replaced on that square.

How it works

  • White pawns promote on the 8th rank.
  • Black pawns promote on the 1st rank.
  • The promotion happens immediately as part of the move.
  • The new piece starts using its normal movement rules right away.

What players usually choose

Most players pick a queen because it is the most powerful option. Sometimes a rook, bishop, or knight is better, especially in tricky endgames where a different piece avoids stalemate or creates a winning tactic.

Simple example

If your white pawn gets from e7 to e8, you do not keep a pawn there. You replace it with a queen, rook, bishop, or knight, depending on what you choose.
