Inhaling deodorant can irritate your lungs and throat, cause dizziness or nausea, and in larger amounts can be life-threatening. Aerosol deodorants are especially risky because the propellants can reduce oxygen, trigger dangerous heart rhythms, or cause sudden collapse.

What can happen

  • Mild exposure: coughing, throat irritation, watery eyes, headache, or feeling lightheaded.
  • More serious exposure: trouble breathing, confusion, vomiting, fainting, seizures, or abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Severe exposure or intentional inhalation: oxygen loss, cardiac arrest, brain injury, or death have been reported in case reports and safety warnings.

What to do now

  • Move to fresh air right away.
  • Call emergency services immediately if there is chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, seizure, blue lips, or confusion.
  • Call Poison Control / a local poison center for advice if the person feels unwell but is awake and breathing normally.
  • Do not induce vomiting.

Important note

If this was intentional or happens repeatedly, it can be a sign of a serious safety issue and needs urgent help. If you want, I can also tell you what symptoms need ER care right now in a very short checklist.
