Mixing vinegar and bleach is dangerous because it can release chlorine gas, which can irritate or seriously damage your eyes, throat, and lungs. If it happens, leave the area right away and get fresh air immediately.

What happens

  • Vinegar is an acid, and bleach contains sodium hypochlorite.
  • When they mix, they can produce chlorine gas.
  • Even small exposures can cause coughing, burning eyes, watery eyes, chest tightness, and trouble breathing.

What to do if it happened

  1. Stop cleaning and leave the area immediately.
  1. Open windows or move to fresh air if you can do so safely.
  1. Do not try to “neutralize” it with another chemical.
  2. If anyone has symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, or severe coughing, call emergency services or poison control right away.

Never mix bleach with vinegar or any acid-based cleaner. Use bleach only as directed, usually diluted with water, and keep it away from other cleaners.
