BSM on a Toyota means Blind Spot Monitor. It is a safety feature that uses sensors to detect vehicles in your blind spots and alerts you, usually with a light in the side mirror and sometimes a warning if you signal a lane change.

What it does

BSM helps when changing lanes or merging by watching areas your mirrors can’t easily cover. If another vehicle enters that zone, the system warns you so you can check before moving.

How it works

Toyota BSM typically uses radar sensors around the rear of the vehicle to monitor the lanes beside you. When it detects a vehicle in the blind spot, it activates an indicator on the corresponding mirror.

Simple example

If you start to move left on the highway and a car is already in your left blind spot, BSM can light up the left mirror warning so you know not to change lanes yet.

Related feature

On many Toyota models, BSM may be paired with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which helps detect vehicles approaching from the side while you back up.
