When ashes are put on the forehead (for example, on Ash Wednesday), the minister or priest usually says one of two traditional phrases:

  • “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
  • “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” (sometimes said as “Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel.”)

These words highlight human mortality (“dust”) and the call to repentance and renewed faith.
