For 2026, the 401(k) catch-up contribution is generally $8,000 for people age 50 to 59, and also for people age 64 and older. For ages 60 to 63, the catch-up amount is higher at $11,250.

2026 amounts

  • Ages 50 to 59: $8,000.
  • Ages 60 to 63: $11,250.
  • Ages 64 and older: $8,000.

Important rule

If you are a high earner, 2026 rules may require 401(k) catch-up contributions to be made on a Roth basis.

Note

If you meant an IRA catch-up amount instead of a 401(k), the number is different.
