What to do in Vilnius

Vilnius is great for a mix of old-town wandering, viewpoints, museums, and a easy day trip to Trakai. If you only have a short stay, start with the Old Town, Gediminas Hill, Užupis, and the Hill of Three Crosses.

Quick Scoop

  • Walk Vilnius Old Town. It is the best place to start, with baroque streets, churches, cafés, and plenty of atmosphere.
  • Climb Gediminas Hill / Gediminas Tower. This is one of the city’s classic viewpoints and a major symbol of Vilnius.
  • Visit Užupis. This artsy neighborhood is one of the city’s most distinctive areas and is often included in top Vilnius itineraries.
  • See the Hill of Three Crosses. Go near sunset for a strong city view and a memorable landmark.
  • Stop by Vilnius Cathedral and Cathedral Square. It is one of the city’s most iconic central sights.
  • Take a day trip to Trakai Castle. Many guides call it a must-do from Vilnius, especially if you want a fairytale-style castle setting.
  • Add a park or river walk. Vingis Park and the riverside paths are good for a slower, greener side of the city.

Best first-day plan

  1. Start in Cathedral Square and the Old Town.
  1. Walk up to Gediminas Tower for panoramic views.
  1. Explore Užupis in the afternoon.
  1. Finish at the Hill of Three Crosses for sunset.

If you like museums

Vilnius also has strong history-focused stops, including the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights and the Lithuanian National Museum. These are especially useful if you want more context on Lithuania’s Soviet-era history and national identity.

Easy day trip

If you have an extra half-day, go to Trakai Castle. It is one of the most photographed excursions near Vilnius, and the lake setting makes it worth the trip on its own.

Bottom line

For a classic Vilnius visit, do Old Town + Gediminas Tower + Užupis + Hill of Three Crosses , then add Trakai if you have time.
