The period of rapid Japanese industrialization that began in the late 1800s is called the Meiji era (or Meiji period), associated with the Meiji Restoration that started in 1868.

During the Meiji era, Japan shifted from a feudal society under the shogunate to a centralized modern state that aggressively promoted industry, railways, modern education, and military modernization to “catch up” with Western powers. This industrial transformation, often described as Japan’s first Industrial Revolution, unfolded roughly from the 1870s through the early 1900s under Meiji leadership.
