Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers and other burrow- dwelling animals, using their long, low bodies to dig into tunnels and flush game out to hunters. Over time, different sizes were developed so that standard dachshunds could tackle badgers and even wild boar, while miniature dachshunds were used for smaller prey like rabbits and hares. Today they are mostly kept as companion dogs, but their bold, determined hunting instincts are still very noticeable in their digging, tracking, and loud barking behavior.
