when computing the hyt date for active duty
For an active duty Sailor, HYT is computed from the ADSD — the active duty service date, meaning the date they first entered active duty. The Navy’s HYT guidance also says active duty and FTS Sailors use all earned active military service to compute HYT dates for E-5 through E-9.
Practical meaning
- ADSD is the key date for the HYT clock.
- HYT limits vary by pay grade, so the same ADSD can produce different HYT dates depending on rank.
- If a Sailor has prior military service, that service can affect the calculation for E-5 and above.
Example
If a Sailor entered active duty on 1 July 2016, that ADSD is the starting point used to determine the HYT date for their current pay grade. The exact HYT separation point then depends on the applicable years-of-service gate for that rank.
What to check
- ADSD, not EAOS or PRD, is the usual reference date for active duty HYT.
- For a corrected HYT date, the Navy says supporting service records may be needed.
