Acetaminophen (also called paracetamol) was first synthesized in 1878, but it did not become a widely used medicine until the early 1950s. It was first marketed in the United States around 1950 in combination products, and then as a stand‑alone drug in the mid‑1950s, notably with the launch of Tylenol children’s elixir in 1955.
