Jeffrey Epstein was incarcerated on two separate occasions following major legal investigations into sex trafficking and the abuse of minors. He first served a sentence in a Florida county jail starting in 2008 , and he was later jailed in New York following a federal arrest in July 2019.

The 2008 Florida Sentence

In 2008, Epstein reached a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors to avoid a possible life sentence. He pleaded guilty to two state felony charges of soliciting a minor for prostitution. During this 13-month stint, he was granted "work release," allowing him to leave the jail for up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, to work at his office in Palm Beach.

The 2019 Federal Arrest

On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey after returning from Paris. He was charged in the Southern District of New York with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy. Unlike his first incarceration, a federal judge denied his request for bail on July 17, 2019, ruling that he was a danger to the community and a flight risk. He remained in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan until he was found dead in his cell on August 10, 2019.
