Pat Riley became head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in November 1981 and coached them through the 1989–1990 season.

He took over early in the 1981–82 season after Paul Westhead was fired, then led the Showtime-era Lakers to four NBA championships (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988) before stepping down in 1990.
