Terry Fox’s right leg was amputated on March 9, 1977, after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) at age 18.

He had begun feeling serious pain in his right knee in late 1976, and further tests in March 1977 revealed the cancer, leading doctors to remove his leg above the knee to stop the disease from spreading.
