The French Revolution is generally considered to have started on 14 July 1789, with the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison in Paris.

Many historians also note earlier milestones, such as the opening of the Estates-General at Versailles on 5 May 1789, as the political beginning of the revolutionary process, but 14 July 1789 is the widely recognized symbolic start date.
