Veterans Day became a federal holiday in 1938, when Congress made November 11 a legal federal holiday called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed Armistice Day as Veterans Day to honor all American veterans of all wars, but it remained the same federal holiday on November 11.
