A penalty shootout happens in soccer when a match is still tied after regulation time and, if the competition uses it, after extra time as well. It is usually used in knockout matches where a winner must be decided.

How it works

  • Each team takes turns shooting from the penalty spot.
  • Most shootouts start with up to five kicks per team.
  • If one team becomes unreachable before all five kicks are taken, the shootout ends early.
  • If the score is still tied after five rounds, it goes to sudden death.

When you see it

  • Common in cup matches, tournament knockout rounds, and playoffs.
  • Not normally used in league matches, because a draw is often allowed there.
  • In World Cup-style knockout games, it comes only after 90 minutes plus extra time if needed.

Simple example

If a semifinal is 1-1 after 90 minutes, then still 1-1 after extra time, the game goes to penalties to pick a winner.
