The Pokémon Trading Card Game was released in the U.S. in January 1999. The official Pokémon history page says “Pokémon Card Game: Base Set” launched in the U.S. in January 1999, and other sources align that the U.S. introduction was in 1999.

If you meant the original video game rather than the card game, that was a different release.
